This study throws light on how medieval critics, when approaching a literary text, depended on extra-textual sources, especially the biography of the creator and the environment in which the text was produced. Indeed medieval criticism was greatly concerned with the reader's response, the author's intention and the historical and cultural contexts.
Consideration of these factors led medieval poets to recognize the importance of vagueness as a literary phenomenon and employed it in their poetry. Some of them successfully utilized it to create highly sophisticated modes of expression, while others misused it and failed to achieve success because of the lack of rules concerning how to employ it. The aim of the present study is to demonstrate that vagueness plays a vital role in making both the creator and receiver of a poetic text adopt an active and dynamic approach to it. Artistic vagueness allows the creator freedom in creating his meanings; it is also a stimulating factor that drives the receiver to involve himself positively in the creative process of penetrating the vagueness of the text.
The study concludes that the factors from which vagueness is created, and that relate to the technical aspects of the poetic language: themes, imagery, metre, rhyme, and background knowledge, are the ingredients feeding the poet's aspiration. Thus to unpick the codes inherent in poetry, readers must make an effort of the imagination to reach a satisfying interpretation of the text, and doing so will enable them to explore new areas of knowledge which in turn enhance their ability to understand and comprehend the complexity of the poetic text more effectively. |
