Abstract : This paper examines two texts, namely, the modern play Hamzat al-Arab by Muhammad ِAbu Sinnah and the traditional folk story Hamzah al-Bahlawan, using some methods of the modern transtextuality theory. The paper intends to explore certain relationships in the play, particularly, intertextuality, metatextuality and paratextuality. It discuses types of relationship in the play Hamzat al-Arab through two approaches. The first involves a study of artistic and structural transtextuality, cultural transference and employment of the folk literature. The second which is divided into two parts, investigates the types of intertextuality. The first is related to descriptive and visual intertextuality, showing how intertextuality contexts are used. The second is related to semantic intertextuality in terms of how the appearance and the disappearance of meaning are employed.
