Abstract : The importance, benefits and purposes of assessment with its place of in the curriculum and the Miller’s Pyramid of Competence The following four questions will be posed: o What are the participants> experiences with the different methods of assessment? o What are the purposes (benefits) of assessment? o What are the criteria of a good assessment tool? o What are the pros & cons of different methods of assessment? I will focus on the criteria (the third question) that include the validity, reliability, feasibility, cost effectiveness and impact. An emphasis will be put on the six components of validity, namely the content, construct, predictive, concurrent and consequential and face validity. I will present eight to ten real-life scenarios: The scenarios are based on our experience with the evaluation of the Saudi Commission for health specialties end of residencies exams.
