King Abdulaziz university contains large number of
radioactive sources used in nuclear medicine at the University
Hospital and at colleges of Engineering, Science, Earth Science,
Marine Science, Meteorology and other colleges.
The use of radiation sources and radiation equipment
should be governed by proper rules and proced ures for: personnel
radiation protection, sources storage, radwaste managements, and
emergencies. Without such rules the benefit expected from
radiation can carry with it radiation hazard to workers, physicians,
and patients. It is well known that the early use of x-rays, which
was used without proper protection, is cosodered a real killer.
This paper aims to put radiation protection rules, procedures
and protocols for the safe use of radiation sources and equipment
to physcians, technical staff security personnel, and others.It also
discusses reducing doses to patients and avoiding unnecessary
exposure. This is expected to reduce cancer incidents at early or
late stages and prevent catastrophic and fatal accidents, like those·
which took place in Brazil and other countries, where many people
lost their lives.
Emphasis was put on safe protocols in Nuclear Medicine
after elaborate data collection. Proper and safe instructions were
given to workers, patiens carrying radioactive materials and
public. |
