Abstract : The main objective of this study is to exumine and evaluate the financial and operational characteristic of school transportation system in some private schools in Jeddah by establishing a set of operation and financial indicalOrs to evaluate performance among school operators. The study tina examines the role of school rranspon department in the sdecLcd schools and at the same time defines how they plan. schedule and operate their service. Special concern is given to c:(plore the nature of the service, fleet Sill'. buses age and type and to find out where is the limitation which affects the operation oflhe service. The study concluded thaL there is a wide range in fmancial and operation performance. These variations have been caused by different factors including the fleet size. operation strategy. number of sLudents who use the service. utilization of resources. average operated kilometer per student and number of seats per bus. The study found that the average cost per student ranges between 800-2000 SR per academic year. average number of students per bus ranges 25·68 studentlbus. average traveled kilometer per student ranges between 370-740 km/year and average cost per kilometer ranges between 1.6~3.04 SR/km. The study concluded that school transportation is most provided on a commercial basis
