:
The public housing projects, which were constructed by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. form one of the most distinct Saudi housing programs. These public housing projects. which consist either of villas, walk-up apartments, and serviced plots or of high rise apartment buildings only, were built in nine of the major cities in Saudi Arabia. The dwelling units were granted to the public by the Real Estate Development Fund. and they have been inhabited for a number of years. The appearance and the floor plan of the villas in the public housing projects are similar in the whole project, therefore, the residents have carried out some alterations, which affect the appearance of their dwelling units. This study is a part of the post-occupancy evaluation of the public housing projects in Saudi Arabia. It identifies and documents the residents' exterior alterations and additions on their dwellings. The study also attempts to recognize the reasons behind these modifications. Furthermore, it seeks to detennine their importance as indicators to exhibit the personal identity of the households, or to make their dwellings distinct from the rest of the houses in Aljazera neighborhood housing project and Alkharj Road housing project in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia. The findings of this study reflect some of the contemporary social needs of the Saudi society and mu!ii: be used to evaluate the Saudi's housing design and planning criteria and to produce better criteria for future housing projects.
