Abstract : The paper aims to explain the relationship between the people and the places. It discusses the human perception of urban spaces within the concept of human values, and its effects on the urban structure in the past and present. The paper emphasises the role of urban landscape to improve and upgrade the urban spaces performance in traditional Arab cities, on the one hand, and to determine the principle of development, conservation and preservation for the urban spaces on the other hand. The paper presents several aspects such as: -Types of urban spaces considering the understanding of activities and its values. - The factors which influence urban spaces -The determination of factors that affect the urban perception - How do the people perceive urban spaces, and -The main characteristics of urban spaces in Islamic Arab cities Finally the paper chooses some urban spaces in Egypt and Saudi Arabia as cases for analysis and demonstration.
