Abstract : The aim of this mixed methods research is to investigate students’ perceptions and attitudes towards using social network sites for learning English. It also attempts to identify if there is a difference between females and males in terms of using social network sites for learning English inside and outside the classroom as well as to determine the social network sites that are most frequently used by female and male students in order to learn English. The participants of this study were 100 female and male preparatory year students at King AbdulAziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. 50 female and 50 male preparatory year students. The findings of this research illustrated that the Saudi students’ overall attitude towards using social network sites for learning English was positive, and they have positive perceptions of the usefulness and the ease of use of the social network sites, which affects the students’ attitude toward utilizing social network sites for learning English positively. It also showed that male students preferred the idea of using social network sites inside and outside the classroom more than the female students who were against the idea of using social network sites inside and outside the classroom. The findings also illustrated that YouTube was the most frequently applied social network site for learning English by female and male preparatory year students.
