Abstract : The present study was carried out to study the gingival and periodontal changes that may occur in asplenic patients. The subjects used were 30 male patients, 25-35 years old, who had undergone splenectomy since more than five years, and 10 systemically healthy subjects of the same age, sex and socio-economic status who served as controls. All subjects were subjected: 1-Clinical dental assessment. 2-Histological and histochemical investigations of the gingival tissue. The results obtained revealed that: 1)There was an increase in the severity of the gingival inflammation, fiber attachment loss, and pocket depth in asplenic patients in comparison to the controls with nearly, similar plaques scores (no significant difference in plaque index). 2)Signs of periodontal destruction were illustrated in the gingival epithelium and connective tissue in asplenic patients. Also variation in the different cell population density was noted including (lymphoid cells, macrophages, plasma cells, and mast cells)in comparison to those in the gingival specimens of control subjects. 3)In the light of the results obtained, it is recommended that : A-Treatment of gingival and periodontal diseases in asplenic patients is necessary. B-Optimal oral care must be maintained in these patients to cut short the harmful complications.
