Abstract : ABSTRACT. This research was conducted on two date palm cultivars namely Ghur and Sukariat Yunbo at the Agricultural Research Station of King Abdulaziz University in Hada Al-Sham for two years (1996 and 1997). The period during which the pistillate flowers remained receptive to fertilization was studied. Pollination was achieved directelly after spathe cracking, two, four, six, eight, ten and twelve days from spathes cracking . Pollination directely after spathe cracking gave the highest either initial or final fruit set percentage and heaviest bunch weight in both cultivars. Meanwhile, delaying pollination after spathes craking induced gradual reductions in fruit set and bunch weight and reached their minimum after 12 dayes. There was a positive relationship between either initial or final fruit set and bunch weight in both cultivars. Under the conditions of this study the 4th (for Ghur) and 6th day (for Sukariat Yunbo) of spathe cracking is considered maximum length of receptivity to obtain appropriate yield of good fruit quality.
